Meet your Personal Trainer

Frances Polumsky

  • American Council on Exercise Certified personal trainer with over 20 years of experience
  • B.S in physical education from Boise State University
  • Instructed Physical Education at Juneau Douglas High School and currently for University of Alaska Southeast
  • Certified Instructor for: Group Cycling (Spinning), Body Pump, Group Exercise, Strong Women, and Zumba.

Mondays & Thursdays: 8pm-9pm
Sundays: 6:30pm-7:30pm

Experience a full body workout to heart-pounding music that will have you moving. A great way to begin and end your week! This club activity is for everyone, no experience necessary.

Level: All levels are welcome

Sign-up/Cost: This is a campus club event, free to REC Center members and their guests with $5 guest fee.

Whether you need the structure that a class provides to insure you stay active, want to learn a technical skill in an ODS course, or just interested in learning something new, the REC Center welcomes all students. Emphasizes flow sequences, long-held postures, corework and breath control. It is a rigorous class meant to balance muscle strengthening and flexibility. Students will gain greater endurance, and the ability to build and use abdominal muscles for power in this class. We will focus on holding our bodies in the proper posture while we sit and meditate. Introduces students to travel and camping in winter. Covers selection of personal, group, and safety equipment for an overnight outing. Emphasizes snow shelter construction and backcountry techniques appropriate for winter conditions. Overnight outings are a required course component. An advanced avalanche field study for experienced recreationalists or entry-level professionals. Topics include rescue for leaders, metamorphism and forecasting, field notes and weather records, mountain weather, advanced terrain, steeps and sluff, snowpit and fracture profiles, snowpack failure and release, avalanche dynamics, research, glaciers and ice avalanches, and advanced practical field exercises, tests, techniques, and experiments. An introduction to the fundamentals of glacier travel and crevasse rescue. Topics include hazard evaluation and risk assessment, selection of personal gear, climbing and safety gear necessary for glacier travel. Knots, rope handling, belay, rappelling, and various climbing, glacier travel and crevasse rescue techniques will be discussed.
